Storyteller #2, stoneware, fired gold, 2” x 12” x 22”, 2001
During these years of making, showing, and teaching art, I have come to the conclusion that we need to bring the stories of abuse to the world. While the individual is profoundly damaged, society is also damaged by the continuation of abuse. The patriarchal construct of silence abuses victims, especially women and children, and needs to stop. The “Me Too” movement is a beginning. Only by exposing rape, incest, and sexual abuse will there be change. Silence around these topics needs to be abolished for individuals and communities to heal and to change the way men, children, and women live together. The taboo of silence must be erased.
Nightstand Centinal: In Memory of Mary: clay, wood, photo, brass, 16” x 18” x 40”, 2016
Centinal (chosen as older women seem to be obsolete also) is an obsolete spelling of Sentinal which means a guard whose job is to stand and keep watch. This is in memory of Mary, a childhood friend who was murdered by her husband of 23 years with a 357 which is what the picture is of.
